Sahara desert excursions in Morocco: how to avoid the pitfalls and choose the right agency

27 September 2026

The desert is almost always the real reason for a trip to Morocco: the picture you have in mind before you have even booked a flight. Sadly, it is also the part of the trip with the most disappointed reviews online: a “luxury” camp in name only, a guide who vanishes once the group has been dropped off, accommodation swapped without notice. None of this is inevitable, but it is worth knowing before you book, not after.

Why so many bad experiences end up online

Desert excursions suffer from a structural problem: the distance between where you book (often Marrakech, 9 or 10 hours' drive from Merzouga) and where the service is delivered opens the door to layer upon layer of subcontracting. You book with an agency, which sells it on to an intermediary, who hands it to an independent driver, who works with a camp whose quality he does not control. Each link in the chain takes a margin, and it is often the last step, the one you actually experience, that pays the price.

The most common pitfalls

  • The camp “with dune views” that does not really give you access to them: some camps are several kilometres from the great dunes of Erg Chebbi and offer only a short camel ride, far from the sunrise promised in the photos.
  • The unlicensed guide who does not speak the advertised language and knows little of the desert's history or ecology beyond a memorised script.
  • The “all-inclusive” programme that squeezes too much driving into too little sightseeing: a Marrakech–Merzouga round trip in a single day means around 10 hours of travel for barely 3 to 4 hours there. The arithmetic alone should ring alarm bells.
  • The last-minute change of accommodation, presented as an “upgrade” when it is really a move to a cheaper partner than the one originally sold.
  • Sales pressure on the ground: unannounced shopping stops and insistent requests for tips for every service provider along the way.

Merzouga or Zagora: a choice with real consequences

The two gateways to the Moroccan desert do not suit every trip equally. Merzouga gives access to Erg Chebbi, the highest and most photogenic dunes in the country, but involves a longer drive from Marrakech (usually over 2 days with a stop in Ouarzazate or the Dades). Zagora, closer by, offers a desert within a single day's drive, with less spectacular dunes but an equally authentic experience for those who value time on the ground over a postcard backdrop. The right choice depends on your overall itinerary, not on an absolute ranking.

How to recognise a reliable agency before you pay

A few simple checks are enough to rule out most unpleasant surprises:

  • A travel agency licence issued by the Moroccan authorities (do not hesitate to ask: an established agency has no reason to refuse to share it).
  • A written, dated programme stating the exact accommodation (the name of the camp or riad), the number of passengers per vehicle and exactly what is and is not included (meals, activities, tips).
  • Recent, verifiable reviews, not just an overall rating: reading the last two or three comments is often enough to spot a drop in quality.
  • A contact who answers specific questions about the journey (actual distance, driving time, type of vehicle) without dodging them or always replying “you'll see when you get there”.
  • No pressure to pay the full amount in cash without written confirmation before departure.

What we guarantee at TravelPlus

A Moroccan agency based in Casablanca since 1991, we work directly with our own partners in the south, with no chain of subcontractors. In practice, that means a licensed guide who genuinely stays with you (not just as far as the drop-off point), a camp whose quality we know because we have visited it, a detailed programme shared before you pay, and a contact you can reach throughout your stay, not just when you book.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I avoid scams on a desert excursion in Morocco?

Check the agency's licence, ask for a written programme stating the exact accommodation, read recent reviews and be wary of any pressure to pay in cash without confirmation.

Merzouga or Zagora: which desert destination should I choose?

Merzouga has the highest dunes (Erg Chebbi) but means more driving; Zagora is closer to Marrakech and suits a shorter trip.

Is a desert day trip from Marrakech a good idea?

Rarely: expect around 10 hours on the road for only 3 to 4 hours there, which greatly limits the experience.
